ET Interview | GE eyes engine deal for India’s stealth fighter, ramps up jet deliveries

General Electric (GE) is actively pursuing a contract to supply engines for India’s Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), a next-generation stealth fighter being developed by the Indian Air Force (IAF). GE’s Chairman and CEO, Larry Culp, confirmed the company’s intention to compete for this significant defense deal, emphasizing India’s strategic importance to GE’s aerospace business. In addition to pursuing this advanced engine agreement, GE is also working to ramp up its jet engine deliveries, signaling a broader commitment to expanding its aerospace business and supporting India’s defense modernization efforts.

The AMCA program is part of India’s broader initiative to enhance its indigenous defense capabilities. The first prototype of the AMCA is expected to be ready by 2028, with mass production slated for 2035.

GE’s involvement in India’s defense sector is not limited to the AMCA program. The company is also collaborating with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) to produce 99 F414-GE-INS6 engines, which will power the Tejas Mk2 fighter jet. This partnership includes technology transfer and local manufacturing, aligning with India’s goal of achieving self-reliance in defense production.

In summary, GE’s strategic initiatives in India encompass both competitive bids for advanced fighter jet engine contracts and collaborative efforts to support the country’s defense modernization. These actions reflect GE’s long-term commitment to India’s defense sector and its role in enhancing the nation’s aerospace capabilities.
