Mac Jones Leads 49ers to Shocking OT Win Over Rams in Wild TNF Thriller

In a stunning Thursday Night Football upset, the San Francisco 49ers edged the Los Angeles Rams 26–23 in overtime, riding a clutch performance from backup quarterback Mac Jones. With Brock Purdy sidelined, Jones stepped in and delivered a poised outing, throwing for 342 yards and two touchdowns, while avoiding turnovers in arguably his biggest start of the season. Wide receiver Kendrick Bourne exploded for a career night, hauling in 10 catches for 142 yards, and running back Christian McCaffrey chipped in with 139 scrimmage yards and a touchdown to keep the offense balanced and dangerous.

The Rams didn’t go quietly: QB Matthew Stafford tossed for a season-high 389 yards and three touchdowns, and Kyren Williams recorded 131 total yards and two scores. But costly mistakes proved fatal — Williams fumbled at the goal line late in regulation, squandering a golden scoring opportunity. In overtime, the 49ers defense held firm, stopping Williams on 4th‑and‑1 at the 11 to seal the upset. Kicker Eddy Piñeiro delivered both the go‑ahead 41‑yard field goal in OT and earlier nailed a 59‑yard strike to force extra time.

This win speaks volumes about the 49ers’ depth and resilience. Despite being banged up and missing key starters, they executed in all three phases — offense, defense, and special teams — to shock a formidable Rams squad in their home building.  Meanwhile, the Rams must reckon with red‑zone failures and costly turnovers, which again cost them in a tight contest despite showing firepower
