Palm Springs bombing suspect talked about explosives on YouTube, authorities say

Authorities have identified 25-year-old Guy Edward Bartkus as the sole suspect in the May 17, 2025, car bombing outside the American Reproductive Centers fertility clinic in Palm Springs, California. Bartkus died in the explosion, which injured four others and caused significant damage to the facility. The FBI has classified the incident as an act of domestic terrorism.

Online Activity and Ideology

Investigators have uncovered a disturbing digital footprint linked to Bartkus. He operated a YouTube channel under the alias “IndictEvolution,” where he posted videos demonstrating homemade explosive devices and experiments with radioactive materials. These videos, dating back several years, showcased his fascination with explosives and his proficiency in creating them. The channel was terminated by YouTube for violating policies on violent extremism.

Bartkus’s online presence extended beyond YouTube. He was active on various forums, including a controversial message board dedicated to suicide, where he shared posts about his nihilistic beliefs and detailed plans for self-harm and violence. In a 30-minute audio manifesto uploaded shortly before the bombing, Bartkus expressed his opposition to procreation, aligning with “pro-mortalist” and antinatalist ideologies that view existence as inherently harmful.

Background and Investigation

Bartkus, a resident of Twentynine Palms, California, had a history marked by familial discord and a longstanding interest in explosives. According to his father, Bartkus’s fascination with pyrotechnics began in childhood and escalated over time. In one incident, he accidentally set their home on fire while experimenting with firecrackers.

Following the bombing, law enforcement agencies executed a search warrant at Bartkus’s residence, discovering a substantial cache of explosive materials, including PETN, a highly destructive compound commonly used in global terror attacks. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities examining Bartkus’s communications and online activities to determine the extent of his radicalization and whether he had any accomplices.

The attack has prompted discussions about the influence of extremist ideologies propagated through online platforms and the challenges in identifying and mitigating threats posed by self-radicalized individuals.
