Telecom Outage Triggers Chaos: Hundreds of Flights Delayed, Cancelled at Dallas Airports

A telecom equipment failure has thrown flight operations at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) and Dallas Love Field into disarray, as a local telephone company’s outage knocked out vital communication and radar systems today. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that, although the problem did not originate from FAA hardware, the blackout forced a ground stop for departing flights and severely limited in‑flight operations. Nearly 700 flights were delayed and about 200 were canceled at DFW, while Love Field saw roughly 160 delays and one cancellation. Passengers endured long waits—on average over an hour at DFW, with some delays stretching beyond two hours—while airlines scrambled to rebook travelers, manage diversions, and deal with cascading scheduling issues. Officials say service was gradually restored after the outage, but the disruption is expected to continue into the evening. Authorities are investigating the cause and are working with the telecom provider to put stronger redundancies in place so future downtime of this kind is less likely.
