More than 100 lawmakers urge scrapping of federal plans to cut LGBTQ lifeline services

Over 100 Democratic lawmakers are urging the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to reverse proposed budget cuts that would eliminate specialized crisis services for LGBTQ+ youth, particularly the dedicated line within the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. This initiative has been instrumental in supporting LGBTQ+ individuals, especially youth, who face disproportionately high rates of mental health challenges.

🚨 Proposed Cuts and Their Implications

The Trump administration’s fiscal year 2026 budget proposal includes the elimination of the LGBTQ+ youth-specific services within the 988 Lifeline, effective October 1. Since its inception in 2022, this specialized line has handled over 1.2 million contacts, underscoring its critical role in providing support to at-risk LGBTQ+ individuals. Advocates warn that removing these services could have dire consequences, potentially leaving vulnerable youth without essential mental health resources.
