Democratic Representative LaMonica McIver of New Jersey is facing federal charges for allegedly assaulting law enforcement officers during a protest at the Delaney Hall ICE detention facility in Newark on May 9, 2025. The charges stem from an incident where McIver and other officials, including Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, were present to conduct oversight amid concerns about the facility’s compliance with fire and construction codes. During the protest, tensions escalated when federal agents attempted to arrest Mayor Baraka. According to the criminal complaint, McIver allegedly interfered by physically obstructing the officers, including pushing and striking them with her forearms. She has denied any wrongdoing and claims the charges are politically motivated, aimed at deterring congressional oversight of immigration enforcement. McIver is scheduled to make her first court appearance on these charges.
