Volkswagen Unveils ID. CROSS Concept — Affordable Compact Electric SUV Previewing 2026 Launch

At the IAA Mobility show in Munich (September 8–14, 2025), Volkswagen presented the ID. CROSS concept—a near-production, compact electric SUV designed to bring affordability and personality back into the brand’s EV lineup. Slotted into the “Electric Urban Car Family,” the ID. CROSS will hit the market in summer 2026, with an anticipated starting price between €28,000 and €30,000 (approximately $32,800–$35,100) aimed squarely at entry-level EV buyers

Built on VW’s upgraded MEB+ platform, the front-wheel-drive crossover packs a 155 kW (208 hp) motor that delivers up to 420 km (260 mi) WLTP range and a top speed of 175 km/h—plenty of performance for both city commuting and occasional longer trips . The exterior blends compact dimensions (4,161 mm long, 1,839 mm wide, 1,588 mm tall, with a 2,601 mm wheelbase) reminiscent of the T-Cross, with design flair like 21‑inch Balboa alloy wheels and a “smiling” light signature that expresses a friendly, approachable character—part of VW’s new “Pure Positive” design ethos

Inside, the ID. CROSS crafts a relaxing “lounge” atmosphere through warm beige tones (“Vanilla Chai” theme), fabric-covered surfaces, ambient lighting, and even floating plant décor in the console. A thoughtful layout provides 450 L of rear cargo space plus an additional 25 L frunk, while the fold-flat seats add camping-style versatility. The cockpit features a user-friendly mix of an 11″ digital driver display, a 13″ infotainment screen, and tactile steering-wheel buttons, addressing previous criticism of VW’s move away from physical controls

On the technical front, the MEB+ system represents VW’s next-gen modular EV platform, delivering upgraded powertrain components, better software, and quality enhancements derived from higher-class vehicles—and serves as the technical backbone enabling competitive pricing . Practicality is further emphasized with towing readiness, including a 75 kg drawbar load (for two e‑bikes) and up to 1,200 kg braked trailer capacity, giving the small SUV family荷 flexibility

In summary, the ID. CROSS concept suggests VW’s renewed emphasis on accessible EVs that combine compelling design, smart ergonomics, and strong functional value—positioning the brand to better compete against low-cost rivals, particularly from China, in the European electric vehicle market
